Enjoy Northern Poconos Scenic Train Rides on The Stourbridge Line

There’s just something special about taking a train. It’s hard not to be seduced by the old-timey nostalgia of railway travel. And for those who believe that the journey is worth more than the destination, trains still rule. Enjoy a scenic ride on The Stourbridge Line with twenty-five miles of historic railroad winding through the Northeastern Poconos along the Lackawaxen River Valley.

The Stourbridge Line is operated by the Delaware Lackawaxen & Stourbridge Railroad Company (DL&S) and is currently offering a seasonal schedule and community-related event trains.  All excursions originate out of Honesdale (unless otherwise noted). Enjoy the panoramic scenery by rail and take the entire 25-mile trip each way from Honesdale or be picked up at Hawley Station along the way.

Riders can get off the train for a quick stretch while the train prepares for the return trip. This exciting 3.5-hour round trip excursion will be one to remember. Hawley riders should plan for about 2 hours. The Hawley Station is across from the Post Office at 100 Main Ave, Hawley. Rail Cars are heated and reservations are suggested. For more info, please call 570-470-2697.  Chooka choo-choo All aboard!

A  Little Bit of History about The Stourbridge Lion

The railroad traces its beginnings to the Delaware & Hudson Canal transporting barges of coal up from Pennsylvania and destined for the Hudson River and eventually the ports of New York City. A  gravity railroad was built to carry coal over the mountains from Carbondale to Honesdale in 1829. Coal would be transferred from train to canal boat at Honesdale. Seeking to haul greater amounts, the idea of steam-powered locomotion was proposed.

The leaders in steam technology at the time were in Great Britain, so three engines were ordered and delivered to America. According to the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, this is the site of “the first commercial locomotive on rails in the western hemisphere.” The locomotive was the Stourbridge Lion and a replica of the steam engine is on display in Honesdale. Both the gravity railroad and the canal were shut down by 1898, and the D&H left to pursue other transportation activities.
